Islamic State group claims Ohio State University rampage

Islamic State group claims Ohio State University rampage

This monday at Ohio state University was in the news, a man attacked people with his car and stabbed others. In total 11 people got injured and one of them in critical condition.
The attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan of 18 years old apparently a Somali Refugee descent and was a student at the campus and was a student of Logistics Management in the College of Business at Ohio State University. According to eye witnesses Artan came driving with his car and hit a few people in the walkway. As the people came to check if he was ok, he left his car and began stabbing people with a knife.
An officer who happened to be in the area responding for a call about gas, saw the action and immediately shot him to death. Four people are still in the hospital.
The Radical Muslin group Islamic State claimed today tuesday that Artan was one of his “soldiers” but the police is still investigating if this is true or not, but a Representative from the Democratic Party said that some muslin’s have been self-radicalised, implying that they haven’t been recruited by the IS but have voluntarily embraced their cause.
The BBC news mentioned that Artan had wrote on his Facebook page that Americans are creating a hostile environment for muslins living in USA and being restricted of practicing their religion.
It seems to me that this is creating a lot of fear and an environment of mutual distrust between muslins and americans. There is a fear that the Somali refugee community will be seen as a danger to the american communities and it can create animosity and tensions.
I hope that the American Society will be able to handle these situations in a way that won’t spread hatred and disunity but provide a way to create an environment of unity and peace between the population.
From the last election, the president Trump used some language that was creating prejudice and hatred towards immigrants and refugees.
There is an urgent need to unity and peace so people can live in security and in an environment that there is freedom of religion and freedom from terrorist attacks.

Finland become the first Contry to Ban coal use for energy

Finland become the first Contry to Ban coal use for energy

Coal energy has been used as a source of energy since the Industrial Revolution that sparkled the development of England and much of the western world since 18th century.
Since year 2000 China has been one of the largest extractors of Coal surpassing USA, India, Australia and Indonesia all together.
The government of Finland is considering banning the use of Coal for energy by 2030. The country has invested heavily in renewable energy sources since 2012, almost doubling the wind power capacity the year after. Today coal is responsible for only 8% of the demand of Nation’s energy. Other countries are also joining efforts to phase out the use of coal in order to reduce the carbon emissions: UK, Austria and the Netherlands, Canada and France (will shut down all coal plants by 2023). In the US, the State of Oregon has decided to ban the use of coal by 2035.
As more countries decide to phase out the use of coal, it may generate momentum to encourage others to join the movement as well.
In the Long run, the more countries adopt the decision, the more other nations will follow and the global impact will eventually reduce the usage of coal and emission of carbon into the atmosphere.
That can make significant contributions to revert climate change.
The use of renewable energy sources as well as the development of new technologies to extract and harvest energy from renewable sources, will allow the shift of the energy market into a more sustainable era in the energy market.
This shift will create new opportunities for the development of renewable energy sources and will provide a framework where more sustainable energy sources can be used to provide energy for communities.
I see this as a way to improve how technology is being used to provide better stewardship of the planet in general, as the solution will be reduced and renewable energy be encouraged by the most developed countries. These are the primary consumers of energy in the world. As they set the tone for the global market, they can pave the way for other countries to follow the way in being more sustainable and provide better solutions that will provide more clean energy initiatives.

One week later another minister off in Brazil

One week later another minister off in Brazil

One week after the Minister of Culture resign from the office in Brazil, the other part involved in the  scandal resigned from his position, this is the sixth since the beginning the government.
Again at Friday the Minister Geddel Vieira Lima resigned from his position as Secretary of Government. This decision came after his staying at the government became a liability to the government, after being accused of using his position for personal gain.
The previous week, Marcelo Calero resigned and accused Ex Minister Geddel to request a “Personal Favor” for the allowance of a construction permit for an apartment in Salvador where Geddel owned one of the units.
This week, after the resignation, Marcelo Calero shared with the Brazilian Federal Police some audio tapes he did himself between the two and also with the President Michel Temer. The situation became much bigger than before, now not only the two ministers are in investigation, but the president is also involved.
Today the president came to the media to announce that he and the president of the senate and the lower house made an agreement to stop the approval of a bill that would decriminalize laundry money and irregular donations for elections. That created a huge wave of protests among Brazilians and the president also menitoned that the taping was innapropriate.
From this past weeks, the government demonstrates once again that is very fragile and having to navigate with caution and consciousness in order to keep the order.
But again, this situation of Brazilian Government demonstrates how the leadership of the Brazilian Politicians are still seeking for personal favors using the public sector.
The two ministers come from two different view of public life. One that believes that is called to serve the nation.
The other believes that the nation is there to serve him.
Brazil needs the first type of minister.

Class Report

Class Report

This week we had lectures with Patrick From Poverty Cure.
They produced a series of teaching material based on video where they address some of the issues of organizations committed to poverty alleviation.
Each video deals with some aspects of the realm of poverty alleviation and the Aid industry.
The first video  mentioned about the Disease AIDs – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome / Human Immunodeficiency Virus – and how the disease attacked the immune system of the person stopping them to produce the antibodies that can fight the diseases or infections that attack the body.
By destroying the defense mechanism of the body, the disease will lead into death as it removes the shield of protection over people’s bodies. This same thing can happen with Systematic AID System as they inject free things into the communities, undermining the conditions and the sustainability of the local people.
The second video talked about microfinance. What called my attention is that people were made to multiply and growth.
The theory that population control needs to be applied to reduce the number of consumers is actually hurting economies instead of creating wealth and development.
Today’s society is giving the idea that people should reduce the number of kids and have less kids and women should go after their dreams and carreer rather than devoting themselves to the raising of the family.
Metui share something interesting about the concept and mentality of the people from the villages and the urban centers, where the villagers still share things and see that everthing belongs to everybody and they share resources, while the young people that has been moving to the large urban center are now becoming more individualistic and more self centered.
SME – asmall media enterprise small companies that employ the majority of the people . They are the ones who need to create wealth and businesses.
We were made in the image of God to be creative and generate wealth.
Human creativity creates wealth.
Prabina shared about the situation in Nepal where they borrow a goat or a chicken and the family pays them back what they got.
Sometimes when they try to implement microfinance, in Nepal, people just fake conversation to get the loan and never come back, or does not change, then it damages the reputation of christians.

The third video series talked about Property of the Land and The Rule of Law.
Today we talked about private property and how it helps people get out of poverty. The bible is very clear in dealing with private property and how they inherit the land from the clans and tribes/families.
The video shares the idea that people who owns their own land, are more careful and changes their worldview. They have ownership of the land and are more included to take care of their houses and better stewards. When things belong to everybody, then nobody owns it and has no ownership of the property.
The rule of law is the concept that the law must be applied in order to make things into order. Without order there is chaos and the working of the rule of law makes things work. When the law is not applied then the population does not believe in the authorities nor will be willing to change for Good.
The examples that the leaders set is very important for the community.
So according to the teaching the foundations of a flourishing society is based on:
Rule of Law
Free Exchange
Private Property
Free Associations
Strong Families and Communities
Civil Society and Churches
Culture based on Trust.
I was very impacted by the teaching and I was very glad that the video addresses the way Westerner have been trying to fight poverty without success.
My goal is to continue to learn and find ways to build communities based on trust.
IN the  final day the series addressed Short Term Missions and it affects YWAM at the hart, since this is the most prominent way that we operate. We were asked to chat and define ways to apply how we can change and apply what we saw in the series in our operations.
In my opinion we as organization need to address the problem, and be aware that we can and what we cannot do. Be honest with ourselves and with the people who we will be working with. It’s important that we prepare the groups we take into communities to bring awareness and teach them that we are not being the superheros, but we are to be servants and humble servants that need to learn and be aware of what God is leading the people to do.

Poverty, INC – Turning poor people from Objects into Subjects

Poverty, INC – Turning poor people from Objects into Subjects

This week I watched the movie Poverty INC from the poverty Cure the movie has been received 50 international film festival honors.
“Poor  people are not objects, but they are subjects, and should be treated as protagonists of their own stories of development.” (Michael Matheson Miller – Director Poverty, INC)
The movie presents a very interesting analysis of the problem of taking people out of poverty. The main message is that poor people  are seing as the object of poverty aleviation while they should be seen as subject of the process. The words for subject and object used here are in the grammar sense.
When someone is seen as the object, then the phrases go like this : The money was raised for me.
While the subject of the phrase, should be like: I raised the money for my family.
The system of poverty alleviation has strong and large players, from NGO’s to Governmental agencies, Global Organizations that raise funds, from taxes paid by population to be directed and distributed to organizations.
For some reason, all the different ways to alleviate poverty have one element in common: they all failed, and for different reasons.
But the most predominant reason is that the process does not involved the most important part o the equation: The poor.
The people living in poverty are usually seen as less capable of making their own decisions. They are seing as individuals, without the capacity to provide for themselves, they are seen as less than humans. In this sense the core of the problem is no different from slavery.
During colonial era, in the 1500’s many africans were captured, and sold for European masters, as labor, to work in coffee farms, sugar farms, cotton farms. They were sold as commodities, and nobody, not even Christian nations were concern about their rights, since they weren’t considered human beings. They weren’t able to make their own decisions. They weren’t supposed to have any rights.
It took many years and the hard work of strong Christians like Willian Wilberforce in London to stop the slave trade.
After the Second World War Colonialism gave room for a movement for independent nations, particularly those who were under some sort of dependence of the European Nations.
Europe itself was in very bad conditions, coming out of the war, and needed much of help and support to recover from the destruction of the World War II. The IMF and THE World Bank were started and then used to help finance the reconstruction of the European Countries. The model then was used to be replicated to the recently young nations, but instead of leading them to independence and development, it created a model of paternalism, and systematic poverty that perpetuated the cycle.
The movie addresses the very key issues that affect the materially poor nations and particularly the way we do charity and provide care for poor communities without the involvement of the communities in the very decision of the solutions.
This needs to change.
The Documentary also presents a very good perspective of local businesses people, religious leaders, and political leaders, to help Westerners see that there are very educated and capable people in those countries as well.
There is a need to change, in the way we see them, in the way we create methodology and strategies that will affect these people.
Very well intentioned people created many mechanisms to promote awareness and even raise fund and start organizations to help and bring resources.
But the solution that is proposed in based on the understanding of the problem.
And the problem is that the people who are offering to help, haven’t figure out the problem, before coming with a Solution.
Dr. John Olman from India, an Indian Physician mentioned that when we do development work we come with solutions, without knowing the questions to ask.
There is an arrogance syndrome that the development workers possess, in the way to help, that makes them assume in the lie that they know better the solution to the problem than the people living close to the problem.
The term Subsidiarity, was mentioned during the video and it seems to address much of the ways to improve:

Subsidiarity is a principle of social organization that originated in the Roman Catholic Church. In its most basic formulation, it holds that social and political issues should be dealt with at the most immediate (or local) level that is consistent with their resolution.
So the organizations that are willing to participate in the process of poverty alleviation should partner with local people and promote their development and their awareness to bring the solution to be searched  and found close to the problem. Not in somewhere else in other parts/countries. There is a need to improve of understanding on how to find solutions and in the process, learn and empower the local people to help them find their own solutions.
The documentary is a great tool to begin conversations and people how they should address poverty alleviation and how they should do to bring awareness in a way that we turn the affected communities not as an object, but as a subject, as the people who are capable to find solutions for themselves.

Brazilian Minister of Culture Resigns after pressure from Another Cabinet for personal gain

Brazilian Minister of Culture Resigns after pressure from Another Cabinet for personal gain

Last Friday the Minister of Culture from The Brazilian Government Marcelo Calero resigned after being pressured by another Cabinet member, Geddel Vieira Lima to use his position to benefit his personal affairs. Geddel Vieria Lima has personally invested in a luxury development project but it affects a historic preservation area of the City of Salvador. Geddel pressured the Minister of Culture Marcelo Calero to allow the construction permit for the apartment complex. The former Minister of Culture decided to resign rather than to bend over the pressure, protecting his reputation and integrity.
This news shows the clash of two different behaviors. The former Minister of Culture was willing to sacrifice his position and protect his career than to submits to the pressure of other minister and approve a construction permit . On the other hand Mr. Geddel Vieira Lima was willing to use his position, pressuring The Minister to loose the requirements for his personal benefit not willing to submit to the decision made. The case is now escalating in the public opinion, as the society is defending the former Minister for not comply with the pressure. The President did not said anything publicly , but has requested that an Ethical Commitee to judge and rule about the situation.
This shows that the team in the government officials, are not willing to compromise their own values for the personal gratification that they used to operate. The actual corruption scandal “Car Wash operation” is on the news for a long time and society is looking very close to the trials against corruption in the political realms in the Brazilian Government.
For me it shows that some people are getting more aware of the situation and willing to step out and speak about the institutionalized corruption that takes place in the government areas of Brazil.
I hope that this will trigger the society to be alert and put pressure before the politicians and bring them to accountability and to clean corruption so engrained in Brazilian culture.

Teenager ask to freeze her body

Teenager ask to freeze her body

This week in England, an interesting case took the news: a 14 years old teenage girl won the supreme court case in London to get her body frozen cryogenically preserved after she died of cancer with the hope that she can be resurrected in the future.
She died in October and was transported to US to be stored there.
According to the Judge the case was not about the preservation of her body but about the dispute between parents over the disposal of the girls’ body. The decision was supported by the mother, but not by the father, who divorced the mother and had no contact with the girl for 6 years before she became ill.
This news shows a very interesting point that is being raising up after the development of science. Some people believe and claim that in the future with the development to health treatment, scientists will be able to break the barrier of death and bring people back to life. According to the current state of science, no evidence whatsoever has been proved to be able to bring death living cells back to life.
In this case, the patient was suffering of a strong cancer disease making it more difficult.
The procedure costed the family  approximately US 46000 to preserve the body indefinitely. The body has to be prepared for the procedure, the body fluids have to be replaced by an anti freezing liquid and then transported from United Kingdom to The Storage Facility in the United States of America.
This event demonstrates how people are trusting in science for the resurrection of their bodies, without any scientific prove or evidence that this will work someday in the future. As for now, it seems to be a great source of  money, as people has put their trust in the “hope” that someday in the future, scientists will be able to provide resurrection procedures for those who are dead.
But what happens to the soul of the individual ? Will it preserve the memories of the dead person ? If this is possible, will the person and memories will be bring back to life ?
The subject should be submitted to a council of bioethics groups, and be discussed with society.
Personally I don’t believe that science alone will be able to provide the means to resurrect life. To this day, it is still a great mystery for science the understanding  of what makes us alive. The idea that human beings are just machines, the belief that reality is just here and now, and science has all the elements to unveil the secrets of life, is a reflection of a secular humanistic worldview that is part of the system that is behind the selling of the services of the company.
The biblical Worldview gives a concrete view of life and according to the Biblical Worldview, those who follow Christ will be in the future have their bodies resurrected from the death. A different body that will no longer suffer from death or decay, but will be eternal.
The idea that science will one day be able to perform resurrection of bodies is to transfer the power of Jesus Christ, to science. Jesus after he was death, was able to conquer death and return back to life. By doing so, he reversed the course of history, opening the door for the resurrection and restoration of God’s original purpose to the universe, including humans.
My opinion, about this case, I’m very skeptical with the capacity of science in bringing life back from death and I see this as a great way to collect money and create a fake hope from the advances of science to make people invest large amounts of money into something that has not evidence that it will work.
Basically people are being in something they don’t really know. But they are trying to prove that they can  pay their way to eternity.

Oxford Dictionaries names ‘post-truth’ word of the year

Oxford Dictionaries names ‘post-truth’ word of the year

This week Oxford Dictionaries choose that the word of the year will be Post Truth – “relating or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeal to emotion and personal belief”.
The usage of the word increase 2000% since last year because of the political environment we are living this year, after the Brexit vote and the victory of Donald Trump.
According to Oxford Dictionaries, the use of the word has been the result of the social media in spreading fake news that are not based on facts but in the beliefs of the social media community.
Apparently the people who share the fake news, are more concerning in spreading the news than to check if the news are truth.
This shows that the understanding and the value of truth in current society is taking a different route than used to mean before the social media.
Today any user has the power to share something. A thought, image, video, and more important, ideas.
The ideas people share is based in the belief of the majority or the understanding of the society where we’re living in.
Very few people check if the information is correct before sharing it. People has the temptation to join the movement or to “break the news” before being accurate or trustworthy.
The election of Donald Trump proved it as he was many times denounced in sharing “news” that wasn’t necessarily true, but make him look good and the people involved did as well.
The belief that a text is truth just by the fact that it is in the internet makes it possible for fake news to be spread and be perceived as truth, when in reality it is not. Some sites, have been specialized in finding the truth about the news that has been shared.
Most of the times, the news are not shared by the larger media companies, nor the larger media agencies, like Associate Press, or BBC.
This by itself is an indicator of a fake news. Usually the news are shared by a blog  that has not a reliable source of information.
And many users don’t necessarily care to take the time to go after the truthfulness of the source, making it more susceptible to fall in to the fake news trap.
What is most alarming is that the social media users are no longer after the truth, but after the sensation of the “breaking news” wave of excitement and truth is taking another route. Post truth is becoming normal and people don’t care about it.
Our society is now turning into sensationalism, rather than in truth. This is a reflection of a post modern society where the feeling of getting excited about sharing a breaking news is more important or is more valuable that being accurate or seek for truth. Our society is seeking for aiming for apocalyptic news, to create sensation, rather than focus on the truth, on what is truth.
The gospel of John makes a very interesting statement as he was telling the discorse of Jesus to Jews who believed in Him:
If you hold to my teaching, you are my disciples, Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32.
In this passage, Jesus was pointing the importance of seeking for truth and how truth can set people free. In the case of a post truth society, people will be in bondage of the lies, the bondage of believing in a lie, will bring consequences, for long periods of time. The media can be used to produce the half truths that makes people believe in lies, that can mislead voters or the public opinion for the sake of passing a law or promoting some sort of strategy for public health policy for example.
The population needs to be aware and seek to find truth, so that it can set them free.

Lecture Review – Kishare Jayabalan – Public Policy

Lecture Review – Kishare Jayabalan – Public Policy

This week I had a chance to hear from Kishare Jayabalan, the director of the ACTON Institute (http://www.acton.org/), he was a former member of the UN Security Council Member from the Vatican (Holy See).
His seminar covered many subjects about how the Catholic Church sees many areas of Humanities Science and their understanding of Philosophy in dealing with subjects of society today.
His teachings subject were:
  • Christian Anthropology
  • Introduction to Public Policy
  • Issues of Justice
  • Issues of Poverty
  • Environmetalism and God’s creation
  • Church State and Society
What stood out to me was how much knowledge and understanding the Catholic Church has put into these subjects and the role of the Church in the society today and how the Catholic Church plays an important role in guiding and giving a moral compass to societies.
As Kishare shared about the different Pope’encyclicals, I was able to see how much influence and understanding these documents from the Pope contain much of knowledge and understanding and how it’s important that that the Catholic Church takes a position before the different governments about some of these subjects.
One of the subjects that called my attention was about population growth and the problem that most of european nations are facing today regarding population growth. The majority of European countries have a replacement rate bellow 2, meaning that the population of those countries are going to diminish to the extinct.
Another subject that called my attention is about the Cardinal Virtues. group off 4 virtues that addresses some of the valuable caractersistics of human beings:
Prudence – Wisdom – the capacity to make good wise decisions and appropriate actions
Justice – fairness – use God’s given ability to judge and decide what is good and bad.
Temperance – Restrain – self control, discretion and moderation regarding apparition.
Courage – fortitude strength, endurance, the ability to confront fear.
These virtues are derived from Plato’s  book Republic and adapted by Augustine of Hippo.
Theological Virtues:
Faith
Hope
Charity
these three appear from the Letter of 1 Corinthians 13, written by Apostle Paul, in the New testament.
Together they form the 7 virtues that are valued and make them a goal to be pursued and looked after.
This week to me as a great eye opener to see how much the Catholic Tradition has thought about these subjects and how much understanding they have about the role of Christians in society. Coming from a Catholic Country as Brazil, i must confess that I did have some prejudice about catholicism as I don’t see my country being immersed in the cardinal virtues and I used to blame on catholicism.
However, I should say that I was very surprised to see much of the same teachings and understandings that we’ve been seen in the School of Humanities and science in terms understanding and application of the Biblical teachings in the subjects of social/humanities sciences.
I am willing to openmyself to the teachings and learn from them as we both seek to find a common ground to seek for God’s willl be done on earth as it is in heaven.
